‘Ow do, Why Us?

By October 22, 2016Articles

Q: What’s with the name?

A: ‘Ow do | Web + Graphics? We both don’t hate it! It is simple, concise, warm and friendly. We also like to think we’re dipping our hat to a place we love and where we have been based for many years – Leeds, Yorkshire – our home.

Q: How much does a website cost?

A: How long is a piece of string? The cost of a website can change drastically depending on various factors, just like how the cost of a house or car may vary. Typically though our website projects generally start around the £3,000 mark for basic business websites. Costs then move upward depending on your unique needs. We can offer web design for simple brochure websites or portfolio websites, all the way through to bespoke e-commerce systems for small, independent stores. All of our websites are designed from the ground up to meet your exact requirements and satisfy the needs of your customers.

Q: How does the payment process work?

A: Usually we always ask for 1/3 of the total cost of the project upfront as a deposit. This is not only for security but also acts as a gesture of intent from both parties. Once the website designs have been signed off and before development begins we collect the second 1/3. Once we have completed developing your site, we have fulfilled the brief, satisfied the agreed project scope and received sign off, the final 1/3 is collected and the website is then scheduled for launch. We like to try and be as flexible as possible with payment terms and will always work with you to agree on the best avenue to take in our initial meetings.

Q: How long does it take to build a website?

A: ‘Ow do | Web + Graphics standard websites take approximately 6 – 8 weeks to create. Our E-commerce (online store) websites take approximately 8 – 12 weeks to create. This time will vary from project to project depending on the specific requirements of that project.

Q: Who will I work with during the project?

A: This is a great question to ask and you should ask it of any web design and development company you are considering. Many companies will farm out work to freelancers or interns. Some companies even give little or no access to client’s who want to speak directly with their web designers or developers. Our clients work directly us and we are always available at the end of the phone or via email to answer any questions you may have regarding your website and online presence. Website maintenance and aftercare is something we also take very seriously and we always try to establish an on-going partnership with all of our clients to ensure their website is not only performing properly, but also to maintain security aspects and keep things up to date. We like to become our clients very own in-house support team for all things relating to their website and online presence.

Q: What platform do you build your websites on?

A: We build all of our websites on the open-source Content Management System (CMS) WordPress. WordPress now powers over 30% of all websites currently on the Internet and there are very valid reasons for it. WordPress is flexible, extendible and can be customised to suit nearly any businesses needs.

Q: Can you help me update my existing website that another web firm built?

A: Yes and no. We generally only support websites that we have fully built. We have this policy so that we can 100% stand behind everything that we craft. There are issues of liability of multiple programmers and/or designers touching the same work/code over time. We do however do website redesigns and have completely refreshed and rebranded some of our clients websites. If you are looking for this type of work it would be best to call or email us to discuss your requirements as a more detailed analysis of what you need is required before we commit to projects in this vain.

Q: Can you help me generate content for my website?

A: Yes.’Ow do would work with you to generate both copy and images, videos or animations etc as you know your business better than anyone – generating content and writing for the web has its own nuances and subtleties that should be factored in to everything that goes in to to your website. Google needs to be able to ‘crawl’ concise information structured in the right way to ensure search engine visibility. We also build your sitemap and help structure the foundation of your website in the planning stages – it all fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Q: Can you help me source photos for my website?

A: Yes. We can either take photos ourselves or we will source stock photos from sites such as www.istock.com. We have photographers and videographers available to produce custom photography and videos for your website. Bespoke photography and video is always advised over stock, however depending on the sort of website you are looking to have built and the audience it is for all influences these decisions.

Q: Do I own my website?

A: YES! Everything that we create will be 100% owned by you. Whether it is branding materials, a website build or both, most of our clients stay with us not only for the duration of the project, but for our maintenance, support and aftercare. We are just irresistible that way. But if for any reason you decide you want to take your site to another hosting service and get another company to service the site, we will happily assist you in making the transition as effortlessly and efficiently as possible. Q: Will my site show up in Google?

A: Each website ‘Ow do | Web + Graphics produce will be developed in a way that search engines understand. We take time to include many background details that will help the search engines locate your site as quickly as possible, through the content, the naming of pages, titles, properly structured, semantic HTML 5 code, images and the inclusion of tags. All within the website build and code itself. We also add (or ‘index’) your site with search engines to generate as much coverage as possible.

Do not be fooled into paying large sums for so-called “guaranteed” search engine listings. Most search engines work is done by “bots”, in other words, non-humans. So it takes a bit of time (about 4 to 8 weeks on average) but we have always found our sites show up very quickly on the most popular search engines.

More can always be done. It takes time and consistency to get good search results.

However, we are NOT and SEO company. We optimise all our sites to be SEO friendly, however we do not actually do deep SEO work on websites. The SEO industry is an art in its own right and should be respected. We have trusted contacts and connections to great people within fantastic SEO agencies that we can put you in touch with should you want to work on your websites SEO to push your site further up search engine rankings. If you would like we can work together with you and the SEO company to ensure you feel comfortable and put your mind at ease should there be elements that become complex or difficult to understand.
